The Southern Interior RCMP is reminding the public that the RCMP charity Cops for Kids doesn’t make cold calls asking for money.

The warning comes after receiving several reports of a suspicious call soliciting donations, in addition to aggressive and high-pressure phone soliciting, according to RCMP Southeast District spokesman Cpl. Dan Moskaluk.

“In most cases, callers on the phone are seeking donations via credit card for teh Cops for Kids charity,” Moskaluk said in a news release.

The RCMP is affiliated with the Cops for Kids Charitable Foundation, and the Cops for Kids Ride is coming up in September, but police say they don’t ask for donations through cold calls.

Team members in the Cops for Kids Ride are responsible for raising a minimum of $2,000 to participate, which they have all done through their own fundraising events and personal contacts, according to Moskaluk. Cops for Kids does fundraising throughout the year, with information on how to properly donate online.

Moskaluk says the public should be wary and question people collecting funds for any cause.

The Better Business Bureau and Canadian Radio-Television Telecommunications Commission are resources available for the public to determine the legitimacy of fundraising campaigns.
