There was good and bad news as a result of RCMP vehicle check stops over the weekend.

On the good news side, no charges followed a Saturday, July 16 police check stop on Okanagan Avenue near 6th Street SE.

“Our members checked 30 vehicles and no charges resulted,” said Salmon Arm RCMP Sgt. Scott Lachapelle.

However, Lachapelle noted the results of individual checks conducted over the weekend were poor.

At 10 p.m. on Friday, one person was charged with being impaired and issued an automatic driving prohibition.

Lachapelle says this prohibition is generally 30 days for the driver. An investigation is conducted and the individual is being charged under the criminal code.

On Saturday, another driver was handed a 24-hour prohibition for being under the influence of alcohol.

And in the early morning hours of Sunday, July 17, a driver was stopped and wound up receiving an immediate roadside prohibition, which is the third type of penalty police can hand out.

“The officer decided to proceed under the Motor Vehicle Act,” said Lachapelle, noting which penalty is imposed depends on a number of factors such as a history of previous infractions.

“In this case, the licence was suspended and the vehicle was impounded.”
