Emergency: A Grade 9 student is taken to an air ambulance for transport to Kelowna hospital.

WorkSafe BC is conducting an incident investigation after a student was seriously injured in a woodshop at the Jackson campus of Salmon Arm Secondary on June 14.

In an initial report, WorkSafe BC found the student was hurt while working on an eight-inch jointer.

“During the course of my investigation there were no observed or determined violations... with the eight inch jointer safety procedures and devices prescribed for the use/operation of this equipment,” reads the report from Mark Harper, who conducted the inspection.

As required by legislation, a formal investigation has been initiated and will be conducted by the school district. This report is required to be submitted to WorkSafe BC.

In the meantime, staff and students have been showing support for the injured student, whose name has not been officially released.

The Grade 9 girl is a member of the school’s band. At the June 15 Wednesday on the Wharf performance by the Jackson Jazz Band, the student musicians all wore blue and yellow ribbons to acknowledge her absence and pay tribute to her.

The jazz band, InspirED program and the cross-country running team created a special personalized yearbook and numerous get-well cards have been created by the students.
