Shuswap Lake spills into campsites

Rising lake is flooding campground, curtailing the activities of summer camping enthusiasts.

The rising lake is curtailing the activities of summer camping enthusiasts.

Both Pierre’s Point and Sandy Point campgrounds have been impacted by high water.

Spokesperson Iva Jules reported Tuesday that Sandy Point has about half a dozen pumps going steadily while, at Pierre’s Point, the whole west end is under water.

“They lost quite a bit of sites,” she said.

However, the situation may change before the long weekend, so she suggests campers contact the campgrounds before making plans. At Pierre’s Point, call Greg Witzky at 250-371-2458 and, at Sandy Point, call 250-832-3793.

According to the BC Parks website, campers are encouraged to check back with the website to keep up-to-date with conditions.

As of Tuesday, Shuswap parks that were listed as flooding were  Cinnemousun Narrows, Herald, Shuswap and Juniper. Impacts included flooded roads, parking lots, boat launches, picnic shelters and docks. Parks staff and contractors have been monitoring the facilities.

At Shuswap (Scotch Creek) Park, the day-use area, the boat launch and associated facilities have been closed temporarily due to high water levels.

At Herald, the boat launch was closed.

Both parks and campsites were open and campsite reservations were still being honoured and taken. More information and flood advisories are also available on Drive BC.
