Firefighters douse a fire that completely destroyed a Shuswap Transit bus Friday afternoon in the 1800 block of Foothills Road. No passengers were on the bus that was out of service and being checked for mechanical problems.

Yup, there was a mechanical problem all right.

An automotive mechanic took a Shuswap Transit bus for a test drive Friday afternoon because it was having mechanical difficulties, explains Salmon Arm Fire Chief Brad Shirley.

"They were trying it out to determine what kind of problems it was having," he said.

That led to a call to the fire department.

Firefighters received a call of a bus on fire about 3:10 p.m. at 2814 Foothill Rd.

Upon arrival, they found the vehicle, with no occupants, completely engulfed in flame.

The fire was quickly extinguished, but not before the bus was destroyed.

"Obviously the cause was likely a mechanical problem," Shirley remarked.
