A fight between passengers on a greyhound bus travelling east through Malakwa lead the Sicamous RCMP to arrest a man wanted on a Canada-wide warrant.

On March 13 at 10 pm RCMP officers were dispatched to a report of a fight between two male passengers aboard the bus. The bus driver reported that the two males had departed the bus after the incident.

Police located an intoxicated man with a facial injury walking in the area that matched the description of one of the men from the bus. The man was taken to Shuswap Lake General Hospital where he received treatment for his injury. Police transported the man to cells in Salmon Arm due to his level of intoxication.

The man’s identity was then confirmed to be 31-year-old John Michael Hurley who was wanted on a Canada-wide warrant for Parole violation. Hurley was remanded in custody. The second male involved in the fight aboard the bus was not located.

Telephone Fraud

On March 12 the Sicamous RCMP were informed that a local senior citizen was the victim of telephone fraud. The victim had been contacted by a person claiming to represent a computer software company who then sold her a software program by phone.

The elderly victim was soon advised that she had been overcharged for the product and that a refund would be credited to her after she sent a money draft in the amount of several thousand dollars to an account in Thailand. Unfortunately the victim complied with the request and transferred money to the foreign account.

Police have confirmed that the telephone numbers used to contact the victim originated from outside Canada and are reminding the public to be aware of this common over payment fraud.

Theft from Mailboxes

On March 16 at 10 p.m. RCMP were informed of a theft from the Canada Post mailboxes on White Pine Crescent in Sicamous.

A witness had observed a newer white Ford extended cab pickup truck park near the boxes shortly before hearing loud noises in the area. Responding officers noted that the culprits had used a tool to force entry into the mailboxes. Canada Post was notified of the break and enter to the mailboxes and the possible theft of mail. No description of the suspect was provided.
