Silver Creek playground gets boost

A community playground for Silver Creek School is $7,000 closer to reality, thanks to the generosity of Roots and Blues festival-goers.

A community playground for Silver Creek School is $7,000 closer to reality, thanks to the generosity of Roots and Blues festival-goers.

“Awesome,” said Amanda Crawford, playground committee member and organizer of the festival booth near the Boogie Bar-N Stage where thirsty festival-goers traded donations for water.

A total of $3,500 was raised and will be matched dollar for dollar by the Let Them be Kids Foundation.

“A few people had seen the (Observer) article on Sturgis and were just sad we didn’t have a playground, and were happy to help,” she says. “And everyone was so nice. Roots and Blues gave us ice to keep our water cold.”

A lack of visitors to their beef-on-a-bun fundraiser at the recent Sturgis North event, set them back by close to $2,000 and left them with 3,000 unsold bottles of water.

With a goal of $60,00, the group was thrilled to be invited to set up an information booth near the busy stage.

A recent bottle drive netted close to $2,000 and one Salmon Valley resident donated another $1,000. And playground committee members have more fundraising efforts up their sleeves.

Volunteers are needed to help deliver Yellow Pages on 10 routes beginning Sept. 15.

A dance at the Silver Creek Hall will be held Saturday, Sept. 17 for the over-19 crowd and will feature  raffles, a silent auction and delicious appetizers. Alcoholic beverages will be available. Tickets at $15 are available at the Silver creek store and Wearabouts.

The committee will host another bottle drive on Saturday, Oct. 1.

There’s money to be won Saturday, Oct. 8 as bright yellow rubber duckies will “race” down the Salmon River.

Anyone 19 years of age and older is invited to “buy” a duck for the race a $20 apiece.

The winning duck will fetch $1,000, while second place will earn $500 and third place $250.

A deficit remains in registered volunteers, with only 40 signed on and a further 160 people needed for the Oct. 15 build. To help volunteer or buy a duck, raffle or dance tickets, call Amanda at 250-832-0484.
