Ice at the Shaw Centre will cost users five per cent more this year

Users of Salmon Arm recreation facilities may see some increases this year.

Darby Boyd, Salmon Arm Recreation’s business and operations manager, told city council on Jan. 16 that a small group of rates will increase.

Going up this year by five per cent at the Shaw Centre are prices for ice rentals, facility rentals such as ‘dry floor’ rentals for lacrosse and other sports, and Little Mountain Field House rentals.

Boyd also suggested that a complete review of all rates be done over the summer to come up with a three-year schedule of rate increases to present to council prior to its 2018 budget process.

Although city council does not have to approve user rates, it can change or deny rates should it see fit. Council expressed its approval of the plan proposed.

Examples of this year’s increases include: a youth prime time rate for Shaw Centre ice from $90 to 94.50 per hour; the adult prime time rate from $167 to $174.50 per hour; and the school non-prime time rate from $59.25 to $62.20.

At the Little Mountain Field House, the prime time hourly rate goes from $33.75 to $35.50, with the daily rate increasing from $236.25 to $248.25.

Boyd reported overall facility costs at the Shaw Centre have increased by six per cent or $84,979 since the last rate increase in 2014.

The increases were the result of food services costs, up $39,000, special events costs increasing by $15,000, administration costs up $24,000 and building maintenance increasing by $6,000.
