Storm knocks out power to Sicamous

B.C. Hydro is reporting 3,900 properties in Sicamous are without power and it may not be restored until noon Thursday.

A storm that tracked through the region left thousands without power in the Shuswap Wednesday evening.

B.C. Hydro is reporting the Shuswap has seen the most outages, 3,900 in Sicamous without power and approximately 3,000 properties in Salmon Arm affected. In the Enderby and Spallumcheen areas about 1,760 properties are without power as well. Heading down to Nakusp and Vernon another 500 customers are without power.

B.C. Hydro attributes the outages to a combination of lightning and wind storms and trees down across wires. The majority of the outages occurred between 4:30-5:30 p.m. and many areas have had power restored power though many in the Sicamous area may not see power return until noon Thursday.

As of 8 a.m. this morning, Drive BC says hydro lines on the Trans-Canada HIghway east of Sicamous are now clear and the traffic is moving normally, after being reduced to single-lane alternating traffic through the night.

It also notes that hydro lines remain down on Highway 97A approximately 15 km south of Sicamous as of 8:21 a.m. The road is reduced to single lane alternating traffic.
