There’s nothing quite like hot soup to take the edge off a cold winter day.

On Saturday, Jan. 21, members of the public will have the opportunity to enjoy up to 20 soups prepared by local restaurateurs in the second annual Soup’s On! event to raise funds for Second Harvest Food Bank.

Some 109 people took the taste test last year and organizers had to turn away about 30 others who showed up at Chances Casino to sample soups donated by 17 local restaurants.

The event was a stellar success that raised about $1,000 for Second Harvest and another grand for Okanagan College’s Salmon Arm Enactus Club, which was to be invested in other community projects.

This year, the event will be held in a much larger venue – the Gathering Place at Broadview Church.

And for those who had trouble carrying the hot little containers of soups, this year, trays will be provided.

Enactus member and Okanagan College business administration student Christina Schulz says she is glad she joined the club and happy to be helping to organize this year’s event.

“When I moved here, I thought it would be a good idea to get to know the community, make friends and help out,” she says, noting the importance of fundraising for Second Harvest, particularly at this time of year. “The goal (of Enactus) is to create and implement projects that will help the quality of life and standard of living in the community.”

Schulz says she is impressed with Enactus and the people who become members of the group.

“They truly want to help the community; everybody there is so passionate about the projects we can do to help make things better.”

The name of the organization, which includes 17,000 university programs in 36 countries, come from its motto:

“We believe investing in students who take ENtrepreneurial ACtion for others creates a better world for US all.”

Tickets for the Jan. 21 Soup’s On! must be pre-purchased and are available at Okanagan College, Drew Lee-Hai and The Hive in Canoe.
