UPDATE: Mudslide damages Mara residence, closes Highway 97A

Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure engineers inspecting slide, site stability.

Update, Feb. 15, 11:52 a.m.

Highway 97A is expected to reopen shortly to single-lane traffic with the OK from the Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure.

Following an investigation by the ministry, spokesperson Sonia Lowe says the site of this morning's mudslide has been deemed safe, and work is underway to reopen the highway.

The cause of the slide remains under investigation, though Lowe said it's likely related to this weekend's warm, wet weather conditions.

Lowe confirmed a home was impacted by the slide and Emergency Management BC, as well as the North Okanagan Regional District, have been notified. She says the home was knocked off its foundation and was heavily damaged.

"Several vehicles parked on the property were pushed onto the highway and these have been removed by our crews," said Lowe.

No injuries have been reported subsequent to the slide.

A Mara residence has been evacuated and Highway 97A remains closed following a mudslide that occurred early Monday morning.

Police report the slide occurred just after midnight on Feb. 15, approximately 13 kilometres south of Sicamous. No one was injured in the slide which, according to ScanBC, came down near Kingbaker Creek Resort. Police say the slide damaged a residence as well as three vehicles and a boat stored on the property.

The occupants of the home were evacuated and are being tended to by the Provincial Emergency Program.

The highway is currently closed, and will remain so until Ministry of Transportation and Infrastructure staff are able to assess the slope and its stability.

MOTI spokesperson Sonia Lowe says the source of the slide has not been determined, and a geotechnical engineer is flying over the area to determine the extent of the slide and its effects, identifying property damage in the process.

“There is fog in the area; however, staff feel that the engineer should still be able to do a good assessment,” said Lowe, who expects to have more information soon.

In the meantime, drivers are being detoured via Highway 97B and Highway 1.
