Feel the rhythm of the music and unleash your inner rockstar.

POUND Rockout Workout is a new form of cardio that is inspired by the fun of playing the drums and it’s spreading like wildfire says Cardio Connection instructor Lisa Papworth.

“This is more of a rhythm based workout the music is great and it’s fun, you get to feel like a rockstar drummer,” she said.

The first session at Cardio Connection in Salmon Arm got underway last Friday and  classes will continue every Friday at noon and alternating Friday’s in the evening.

“This is a workout for anybody. It’s for tall, short, curvy people, seniors, and even for those with disabilities, and it can be modified for anybody,” said Papworth.

Every 40-minute POUND class replaces the quintessential arm pumping found in Pilates with the rapid arm movement of drumming and adds a series of four positions with numerous techniques and variations.

“This workout is a full body workout. It works everything from your triceps to your calf muscles and it really engages your core too, thanks to the weighted drum sticks,” Papworth said.

The Ripstix, as they are known, add a quarter pound of extra weight to each movement which throws the body off balance, creating contraction in the core and forces the core to be engaged.

Instead of counting reps or keeping track of the clock, POUND shifts your focus to rhythm and volume.

Each two to four minute song combines cardio, Pilates, strength movements, plyometrics and isometric poses.  At the end of a class participants can expect to complete up to 15,000 reps.

POUND was started by a pair of self-proclaimed fitness renegades Kirsten Potenza and Cristina Peerenboom as a underground movement in Los Angeles in 2011.

Since then, POUND has grown to a network of over 7,000 instructors in 35 countries.

Correction: It was previously stated that Cardio Connection was the first POUND class in Salmon Arm. Mackenzie Williams from Tough Love Bootcamp was the first certified instructor in Salmon Arm. We apologize for the error.
