September 22, 1928 - April 29, 2020
Dorothy Louise Cadden (Zubick) passed away on April 29, 2020 after a brief stay at the Shuswap Lake General Hospital. She was just shy of celebrating her 92nd birthday.
Known to her friends as "Dot" she had been a resident of Piccadilly Terrace in Salmon Arm for the past 10 years having moved from Vernon to be closer to family.
Dorothy was born in Luseland Saskatchewan on September 22, 1928. She was one of six children born to Peter Zubick and Sophie Noome Valouche. (Mary, Clara, Lilian, Ronald, Dorothy and Sheridan). Her mother died during her first year and her father then married Ruth Poole and together they had 2 more daughters, Margaret and Gladys. Her brother Sheridan died at an early age from a heart defect.
Typical of so many families during the great depression, homesteading on the prairies dealt a hard life to new immigrants. She often talked about how poor the family was and how her father had lost everything as a result of hard times. She treasured her keepsakes as a remembrance to those times and the bond that developed between family and loved ones.
The family moved to the Kootenays where she spent her later youth and early adult life. While living in Nelson she met and married Herbert Henry Cadden - "Bert" in 1948. Bert served with the RCAF in WW II and following the war he began a career as a locomotive engineer with Canadian Pacific Railway.
Dot's early married life was spent being a railroaders wife and raising 2 children Lynn and Jim. The family made stops in Sicamous and Revelstoke where she settled following the sudden death of her husband in 1971.
Dot was an active member and volunteer of the Revelstoke Legion Ladies Axillary and upon her relocation to Vernon, she volunteered at an Adult Special Needs Group Home.
Her retirement years saw her active at the Shubert Seniors Centre in Vernon. Dot led the Sickness and Wellness Committee for many years and devoted countless hours to visiting and supporting fellow members during failing health.
Dot would love to be kindly remembered as a "Healer". She was a compassionate and kind person and always considered others over herself. She was always trying to improve the quality of life for the less fortunate. She had a fascinating interest in the power of the mind in healing of the body and her library was filled with books on this topic. Dot was also a strong believer in the benefits of natural foods in healing. She was a collector of recipe books, jewelry and china; a common trait of women of her generation.
Dot never entered the electronic age. Texting and emailing were foreign to her. "Why would you do that" she would say, "instead of picking up a phone and talking to them in person."
She will be greatly missed by her family: Lynn Fitzpatrick and her husband Ralph and her children Michael and Jenny (Drew). Jim and his wife Diane and their children Robert (Leanne), Lanna (Bryce), and Bradley (Brier). She was known to her great grandchildren as "GG". Carter, Makayla, Colby, Griffin, Keira, Simon, Myla, Kai, Paige, Sylvie, and Parker will miss this tiny old lady who wore a red sweater, earrings, a butterfly broach.
Dot always looked forward to theme parties and family gatherings (Spring Flings, Fall Frolics) at Jim and Diane's. Her Celebration of Life will be held at the family's annual Fall Frolic.
Dorothy was cremated and her ashes will be respectively placed in the natural world where she will be remembered forever.
The family would like to thank the staff at Home Support, Mt Ida Clinic and the Shuswap Lake General Hospital for their gentle care in the last few years. The family extends special thanks to Jeremy Menzies and the staff of Piccadilly Terrace for treating her so well.
