In loving memory ~
Doug passed away peacefully on Sunday February 27th at North Okanagan Hospice (Vernon), surrounded by family. He put up a valiant fight against ALS in his final years. His generous nature and sense of humour will be greatly missed by his family and his many friends.
Doug was a respected educator all his working life, starting as a high school science teacher and going on to become a Principal, Assistant Superintendent, and finally Superintendent of School District 83 for 14 years until his retirement in 2011.
In 1990 he established a student exchange program between SD 83 and Japan and continued his support of this program until his retirement. He was also a strong advocate of school music programs and established a scholarship for Indigenous students seeking advanced education.
In his private life, Doug was much loved for his humour and strong friendships. He loved cooking and entertaining in his home, always laying an elegant table. He also enjoyed travelling and visited many parts of the world during his lifetime.
Doug is survived by his wife, Beverly, and by his children Kelly, Meghan, and Scott. We hope he is now reunited with his beloved dogs, Piper and Skye.
We would like to thank Dr. Mike Murphy, Dr. A. Spencer, the nurses and care staff for their excellent care. They kept him laughing and made him as comfortable as possible.
A private Celebration of Life will be held later this year. All who wish to honour Doug are invited to donate to the ALS Society of BC.
