George Richard Gibson died in Salmon Arm at Mount Ida Mews May 19, 2019, at the age of 95. He was born in the Hackney borough ("the Wick") of London, England, on August 3, 1923.
George served in the Fleet Air Arm of the Royal Navy during WW2; and married Rachel Olive Spencer in 1943. They immigrated to Canada: moving from London to New Liskeard Ontario in 1957; to Vancouver BC in 1964, then; finally, to Salmon Arm in 2006. He was; a "Telephone Pioneer": working for the British Post Office, Northern Telephone company, Lenkurt Electric, B.C Telephone and taught at B.C.I.T.
While living in northern Ontario, he was initiated into Freemasonry in Temiskaming Lodge # 462 in 1960. W. Bro. Gibson was a founding officer of Blue Mountain Lodge #182 BCR in Coquitlam BC, and became its Master in 1979. He was one of the founders of the Coquitlam Presbyterian Church.
He was predeceased by his wife Rachel in 2018 and survived by sons Anthony and Alan, daughter in law Kathleen, grandchildren Jennifer (Grant) and Stephen; and great-grandsons Jacob and Owen.
He was an understanding and devoted husband for 73 years, a wonderful father, and a proud granddad. He had an English wit, and often put it to use. There was always time for cup of tea.
His remains were cremated. A service will be held at Saint Andrews Presbyterian Church; Sat. Sept. 21 - 1:30 pm, 1981 - 9th Ave NE, Salmon Arm.
