July 3, 1939 - December 1, 2021
George Welburn Lein, the "Mayor of Canoe", has stacked his last 2x4, passing peacefully on Dec 1, 2021 at age 82. For their kind care, the family thanks the staff at Shuswap Lodge and Shuswap Lake General Hospital.
Welburn was born July 3, 1939 in Salmon Arm to George and Dora Lein. Welburn fondly reminisced about his time as a bulldozer operator, for Canadian Pacific Railway, in the 1960's. In the late 1960's, he married and purchased land from his parents. The property on Lyman Hill, (named after Great Grandfather Lyman), was where he built a house, and raised three boys, three doors up from his parents' place.
Following in his father's footsteps (23 year career at Federated Co- op), Welburn worked at the Co-op Sawmill for 33 years, primarily as a stacker operator. He enjoyed working outdoors, helping his sons with various home projects, and his tractors. In the winter time, Welburn was often seen driving his tractor, helping fellow Canoe-ites plow their driveways, and visiting with friends.
Welburn is survived by his sons: David, Richard, and Mark, two sisters Joan Hilton, Gloria Kenny, four grandchildren, and numerous friends.
Due to Covid, and Lower Mainland road closures, a celebration of life is postponed until Summer 2022.
