September 1, 1930 - June 6, 2018
It is with immense sadness and sorrow we announce the passing of our beloved mother, Germaine (Gerree) Yvonne Loran, age 87, on June 6th, 2018 at Andover Terrace, Salmon Arm, BC. She was preceded in death by her former husband Dr. Alvin Urban (Calgary), husband Hugo Loran (Banff/Salmon Arm), and her sons Larry and Gary Urban.

She was born on September 1, 1930 in Heisler, Alberta to Lawrence and Gertrude Schauwecker, one of seven children; Lorne, Eileen, Fern, Anita, Ted and Janice.

Germaine grew up in Fort St. John, BC.  later obtained her nursing credentials at Riverview Hospital in Coquitlam BC. After retiring from nursing, Germaine enjoyed a lengthy career with Canada Post in both Banff and Salmon Arm until full retirement.

Germaine enjoyed being active in the community. Through her involvement with a group known as "Situation 73", she was selected to travel to Ottawa to meet with then-Minister of Indian Affairs and Northern Development Jean Chretien and was instrumental in urging the Trudeau government to make more housing available in Banff National Park for those that worked there. She was recognized for her vocal criticism of parks local administration and tirelessly advocated for affordable housing. She was later elected to the Banff Advisory Council in 1976.

One of Germaine's proudest accomplishments was the creation and execution of the series of Loran Lectures, in honour of her late husband Hugo, titled "Reaching Out to a Troubled World". She was also a fierce advocate for the protection of children and was known to discreetly donate to families in need in many ways.

Germaine is survived by her brother Lorne Schauwecker and sister Janice Osborne, her children Dana (Lois) Urban, Donald Urban, Robert (Patricia) Urban, David Loran, Jonathan Loran, her grandchildren Joshua (Dee) Urban, Jennifer Urban, Jody Urban Bell, Kenzie Urban, Katelyn Urban, Dallis Loran, and great grandchild Jesse Urban.

Interment will be on Saturday June 23rd, 2018 at Mt.Ida Cemetery, Salmon Arm at 11:00 AM.  Memorial Service and reception to follow at R.J Haney Heritage Village and Museum (751 HWY 97B SE, Salmon Arm, BC) commencing at approximately 12:00 PM.
