Gertrude passed away at Hillside Village in Salmon Arm on Saturday, March 28, 2009 at the age of 89. She was born November 13, 1919 in Wawota, SK, to parents Fredrick and Alberta Greenbank (nee Watson). At a young age she moved with her family to the Lower Mainland of BC. She married Walter Schiefke at New Westminster in 1946. Gert and Walt raised two sons, Ronald and Calvin while living in the Fraser Mills townsite, near Coquitlam.

Gert and Walt moved to Salmon Arm in 1985. Gert’s life was a dedication to family, her love for music, her love for nature and her devotion to the United Church. She was a member of the Shuswap Singers as well as the United Church choir in Armstrong. She will be remembered for her generous, loving, fun spirited nature and of course her unwavering smile that continued on even in her final days. She was predeceased by her parents, her husband Walter, brothers LeRoy and Hugh, and sisters Meryel and Lucille. She will be sadly missed by her sons Ron (Marian) of Ladysmith, Cal (Deana) of Salmon Arm, granddaughters Erica (Derek), Kristen, Heather and Jessica, her great grandson Cole, nieces, nephews and numerous friends. The family would like to thank the staff at Hillside Village for their wonderful care during Gertie’s later years.

A funeral service will be held at Fischer’s Funeral Services on Sunday, April 5, at 1:00 p.m. with Chaplain Bill Kiesman officiating. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Good Samaritan Society, 2891 15th Ave. NE, Salmon Arm, BC, V1E 1G9.
