Kathleen (Kay) Currie, a life-long resident of Salmon Arm, passed away peacefully on March 22, 2009 in Bastion Place at the age of 91 years.

Kay was born in Salmon Arm on May 8, 1917 in a house on 3rd Ave., which still stands today. Her parents Helen and George Shirley emigrated from England in the early 1900’s along with two siblings, Marie and Jack. She received all her schooling in Salmon Arm and finished her high school in the mid-thirties. At twenty, Kay met her future husband-to-be Douglas Currie, who was also born in Salmon Arm, and they were married December 13th, 1939. They built a house in town and eventually moved and built on North Broadview where they raised their two children.

Kay was well known in the community and worked in many places such as S.A.F.E. Packing House, the old Salmon Arm Hospital, the Shuswap Lake General Hospital, Bedford’s Drugstore and “The Tea-Cozy” in Centenoka Park Mall. She belonged to the S.A. Historical Society where she took great pride in sharing much of her own history. Kay loved her town of Salmon Arm and enjoyed socializing with the people; she worked hard balancing work and caring for her family which was her first priority, her pride and joy. Her hobbies included knitting, crocheting, sewing and she loved to cook and bake.

Kay is predeceased by her brother Jack, sister Marie and husband Doug. She will be lovingly remembered by her daughter Myrna Hack (Lionel), son Ron Currie (Penny); grandchildren, Vicki (Neil) Marrs, Trevor (Erin) Hack, Roni-Kae Currie, Doug (Karina) Currie; great grandchildren, Morgan, Mitchell, Gabrielle, Mackenzie, Nathan, Jenna; brother Pat Shirley (Sharon) and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial tea honouring Kay will be held on Saturday, June 6th, 2009 from 2:00 – 4:00 p.m. at Fischer’s Funeral Services.
