Louise passed away peacefully and with dignity at home on June 6th, 2017 with her beloved husband David, daughter Char, and sister Margaret at her side.

She was born in Toronto, Ontario on June 20, 1944. Louise was a graduate of Simon Fraser University in 1992 with a Bachelor of Art Honors First Class in Geography and Communication. She also completed post graduate studies at Simon Fraser. Louise worked in software development where she excelled in training.

Louise was an unsurpassed quilter, a gift which she shared with the Langley Quilters Guild. After retiring in 2006, she devoted herself full-time to quilting and contributed to the many community charities supported by the Langley Quilters Guild. In 2008, Louise and David moved to Blind Bay where she continued quilting for her family as well as the Langley and Shuswap communities until Amyotrophic Lateral Sclerosis (ALS) took over her body. Louise was proud of the fact that ALS did not take away her mind, spirit, or motivation to help others. She was also proud that she died with the “largest fabric stash in the Shuswap.”

Louise is survived by her devoted husband of 29 years, David Hylands, her daughter, Charlene Louise Hoyt, her sisters: Margaret Betts, Blind Bay, Linda D’Souza, Calgary, Deborah Hudlin Brandon, Brenda-Rae Piri, Calgary, as well as her niece Jennifer Smith, Calgary, and her parents-in-law, Christopher and Shirley Hylands, Blind Bay. She was very proud of her daughter Char, a talented artist who graduated from Emily Carr University of Art and Design. Char also has used her art skills and creativity in the film production industry.

A special thank you to Doctors J.E. Bratty, R.M McDonald, and C. Calder, (Royal Inland Hospital) as well as the Salmon Arm palliative care team and ALS Society for their support and equipment.

If desired, donations in Louise’s name may be made to the B.C. ALS Society.

No viewing nor services, at Louise’s request. A private family celebration will be held at a later date.
