Rev. Hubert Maxwell Butcher

The Rev. Hubert Maxwell Butcher, M.A., B.Div., D.Min., Hon. Assoc. Rector at St. Michael and All Angels Anglican Church, Prince George, passed away peacefully November 6, 2007 at the age of 83. Hubert was predeceased by his loving wife, Eva. Hubert is survived by daughters Jennifer, Dorothy and Caroline; sons David (Lorraine) and Peter; four grandchildren and three great grandchildren. Hubert was also predeceased by his sister, Margaret but is survived by brother-in-law Rev. Michael Lapage, sisters-in-law Millie Bonney and Jean Runicles, as well as nephews and nieces in Canada and England.

Born in Kenya, Hubert studied at Cambridge and was ordained to the ministry. He served with the Church Missionary Society in India, the Intervarsity Christian Fellowship, as well as in parishes in Fort Vermilion and Beaverlodge, Alberta, and Surrey, BC. A veteran of the Second World War, Hubert served in Burma with the 4th Prince of Wales’ Own Gurkha Rifles. Hubert and Eva retired to Sorrento, BC where they enjoyed a wide circle of friends. They moved to Prince George in 2005 to be near family.

Hubert was a scholar, writer, poet and composer. A funeral service was held Monday, November 12, 2007 at 2:00 pm at St. Michael and All Angels Church, Prince George. Inurnment followed at St. Mary’s Church, Sorrento, BC. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Primate’s World Relief and Development Fund of the Anglican Church of Canada.
