September 3, 1948 - August 20, 2024
In loving memory ~
Robert (Bob) Stanley Miller passed away peacefully on August 20, 2024, after a 2-year battle with cancer.
Bob was born on September 3, 1948, in Vancouver, BC to parents James Ernest and Edith May (Nee Ballard) Miller, the second of three boys. He grew up with his family in Quesnel, BC, where he graduated from Quesnel Secondary School in 1966. Bob and his best friend Steven Russell relocated to Vancouver, where he dreamt of becoming an architect. For a short time, he worked for Kenmore Trucking assembling vehicles before settling into a career working for BC Tel as a Lineman. During these early years, Bob also attended classes at the MacKay Technical Institute where he learned how to become a draftsman, designing custom homes. In 1973, Bob met and fell in love with Nancy Magee through a friend and the two were quickly married that same October. They went on to have two children, Jim (1976), and Jennifer (1978).
Bob's career with BC Tel took him and his family to Kamloops and then Logan Lake. While there, he was able to fulfill his dream of designing and building a log home of his own. Additionally, he also served as alderman on the Logan Lake town council from December 1984 to November 1986, where among his accomplishments he helped to establish the Steak and Lobster charity event for the local Lions chapter, which is still held annually. In 1991, Bob and the family moved to Salmon Arm, BC, where his children graduated high school. Bob and Nancy later relocated to Kelowna, BC in 2001, where he retired from BC Tel (Now Telus) in 2003.
Throughout his life, Bob also established and ran RSM Drafting Services Ltd., a business where he designed and drew plans for log homes, frame homes and commercial buildings from 1976 through his retirement earlier this year. Along with many log builders, his plans have been converted into beautiful homes across BC and North America, and even into Europe and Japan. This past year he was proud to publish a collection of his favourite log home plans entitled "Drawing Dreams". His entire catalogue of home plans has been donated to UNBC where they will help to educate, and inspire a new generation of drafts-people, engineers, and architects. His business' tagline was "We draw your dreams." and Bob made that mission statement a reality for many people, many times over.
Bob was predeceased by his father James (Ernie) in 2001 and his mother Edith (May) in 2023. He is survived by his two brothers (Bud and Glenn) and their families, his wife of nearly 51 years, Nancy, his children Jim (Katrina) and Jennifer (Ricky), and his cherished dogs and grand-dogs.
Bob was a kind and generous man, a strong union supporter (some might argue TOO strong), a friend to many (especially dogs), a loving husband and a wonderful father. He will be greatly missed.
"For everything exists and not one sigh nor smile nor tear, one hair nor particle of dust, not one can pass away." - William Blake
