Sadly, we regret the passing of Robert Reid Smith at Shuswap hospital after a short illness.
Bob was born in Kilsyth, Scotland. After graduating from Kilsyth Academy at 15 he went to work as a blacksmith's apprentice and spent time down the mines in Dumbreck Colliery. He initially came to Canada in 1955 to work in the coal mines but on the arrival in Canada he decided to never go down the mines again.
He made his way out to British Columbia where he took up scuba diving and became a diving instructor. He was an avid spearfisherman and he was involved in numerous search and rescue operations off the BC coast.
He returned to Scotland in 1961 and in 1967 he emigrated to Canada and settled in the Toronto area. Bob had a knack for selling and for a long time he was a furniture sales manager at Kmart in Brampton, Ontario. He later worked for Shriro Canada in Toronto, making salesman of the year a number of times.
He was an avid amateur radio operator and took great pride in maintaining his home and garden.
After retirement he moved to Salmon Arm where two of his brothers were living. He was a regular at Timmy's every morning joking with his friends.
Bob is survived by his four brothers George, John, William and Sandy, sons Chris and Blair and Grandchildren Nicole, Sunya, Cory, David and Kira-Lee.
Robert will be forever loved and remembered.
The family appreciate and sincerely thank all staff at Shuwap hospital for their loving care and support.
A celebration of life will be held at a future date.
