It's with much sadness to announce the passing of Roger Picard peacefully on January 22, 2022, in Vernon, BC at the age of 85, just short of his 86th birthday.
Roger was born in Loon Lake, Saskatchewan. He was the second youngest of 7 children. He lived in Meadow Lake, Saskatchewan, until the age of 2 and then the family moved to Moose Jaw, SK, where he attended school and was a very good student. At the age of 12 or 13 Roger became very ill with a very high temperature for several days which resulted in a brain injury. He lived for most of his life in Moose Jaw with his parents, Wilfred and Marguerite (Margaret) Picard, until their passing.
In the '70s, Roger worked night security for several different businesses in Moose Jaw. He worked with two Dobermans that he raised from puppies and trained using hand signals and whistles. Roger and his dogs were a strong deterrent to anyone up to mischief when they were around!
He moved to Salmon Arm in the early 1990's, he sold his car and bought a bicycle with a little bicycle trailer. Roger would get up in the mornings, ride all day sometimes until after dinner, occasionally until after dark. He rode so much that he had 3 bicycles in rotation as he wore them out with all the mileage he put on them. Roger was very social and chatty so on his rides, he would stop talk with anyone he met, making many friends over the years. As he grew older, the bicycles were replaced with mobility scooters and his rounds included the malls in town where he became a bit of a fixture!
Roger is survived by his niece, Maureen Moen of Salmon Arm, who has been his caregiver for nearly 10 years. Sister, Germaine Nelson in SK. Numerous cousins, nieces, nephews in BC, SK, and AB.
Roger will be sadly missed as he was a big part of his family here in Salmon Arm. There will be no funeral service or Celebration of life for Roger, but you can just celebrate his memories wherever you are.
