April 16, 1936 - February 20, 2020
With his family by his side Ron passed away peacefully on February 20, 2020.
Ron was born in New Westminster to Owen and Mary Armitage. Ron excelled in school and skipped ahead a grade where he met Audrey, his high school sweetheart. Ron and Audrey married and raised a family of three boys, Brad, Jay and Don. Ron went to UBC for an undergraduate degree and later returned to obtain his MBA. The family lived in Vernon, Calgary and Vancouver but always spent the summer months at the cabin on Shuswap Lake.
Ron had a varied career over his life time. In Vernon he was the manager of Vernon Lumber. While in Vernon he had a short stint in politics when, at the age of 26, he was elected to the Vernon City Council at a time of major municipal Centennial project construction. Ron was the branch manager of Qualico Construction in Calgary and later in Vancouver. Ron owned and managed Armitage Lumber and Cascade Garden Centre where he assembled a knowledgeable, friendly and dedicated staff who were all like family. The business had a very loyal customer following. Ron would later go on to be a highly regarded tax expert for H&R Block.
Ron was a dedicated hockey father and always made sure his boys got to their hockey games and practices on time. Ron was a long-time season ticket holder for the Vancouver Canucks and enjoyed going to the games. He also enjoyed golfing, fishing and music. Ronny had a very good sense of humour and was well liked by all who knew him.
Ron is survived by Audrey, his wife of 62 years, sons Brad, Jay, Don, daughter in-law Lorraine, grandchildren, Farley and Zach, and his sisters Shirley Weir and Marnee Peters.
There will be a celebration of life at a later date this summer.
A very special thanks to the nurses and care-aids at Mount Ida Mews - Ortega, for the wonderful care and compassion shown to Ron over the past two years.
