Ruby Gladys Hoops

December 18, 2011

It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Mother and Grandmother, Ruby Hoops, on Sunday December 18, 2011 at the age of 82 years at Hillside Village, Salmon Arm, BC.

Ruby Johnson was born in Evelyn, BC to John and Bjuty (Julia) Johnson. She was the second of seven children. Times were tough in those days so at the age of seven, Ruby went to live with her Uncle Fred and Aunt Selma Rosberg (Poppa & Nannie) who had two sons but desperately wanted a daughter. She grew up there with her “brothers” (cousins) Orville and Fred Rosberg.

Ruby met her future husband, David, when she was still in school. David’s sister was one of Ruby’s teachers. After high school, Ruby made her way to Vancouver to study nursing. She graduated as a Registered Nurse and soon after married David in April 1951. They settled in Vancouver and started their family which included Gordon, Theresa and Peter. Ruby supported David’s calling to the Ministry and soon the family found themselves moving around the province. They finally retired to Enderby, BC to spend their final years amongst friends and family.

Ruby lived a full life and was very strong in her faith. Her family was her first priority but her church family, extended family and many friends were extremely important to her as well. She was a happy, content person, full of life and energy even when she developed Parkinson’s Disease. It didn’t get her down - she faced every day in a positive way. She helped everyone she met and always had a kind thought and words of encouragement for them. She was a very loving and kind soul and she will be greatly missed by all who knew her and the many lives she touched.

Ruby was predeceased by her husband, David in 1996 and her daughter Theresa in 2010. She is survived by her loving family: sons Gordon (Frances) of Toronto and Peter (Veronica) of Salmon Arm and son-in-law Jim Goodlake of Castlegar. She is also survived by her nine grandchildren: Dan, Erin, Alannah, Zoe, Sarah, Barrett, Brennan, Cassidy and Tyson.

There will be a Memorial service on Monday January 2, 2012 at 2pm at St. Andrew’s United Church in Enderby, BC. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Parkinson’s Society of BC.
