April 15, 1926 - July 28, 2020
Sara Alberta Murdoch passed away peacefully on July 28 at 94 years of age. "Sadie" was born on April 15, 1926 at Blackie, Alberta and was raised on a nearby farm at Brant. She married Harvey Chaffee in December 1944 and they farmed near Cayley where they had 2 children, Linda & Roy. They divorced in 1952 and Sadie moved to Calgary where she took a secretarial course and worked for National Life Insurance Company. She married George Murdoch in November 1955 and they had 2 sons, Greg & Brad. Sadie & George moved to Canoe in 1963 and built the Double M Motel. In May, 1966, son Greg, 9, was hit by a car and killed on the highway. In 1972 they sold the motel and built a beautiful home overlooking the Larch Hills. She was the secretary at North Canoe School for a few years and later was a medical receptionist for Dr Newell/Dr Marr.
She was a member of the Shuswap Lake Hospital Auxiliary for 30 years and enjoyed being a "Greeter" for many of those years. Curling was her passion. She skipped many games in the old curling club as well as the existing one and attended many out of town bonspiels.
Her favorite memories were enjoying holidays on the lake with family, grandchildren and friends. She loved fishing and did some ocean fishing with her brother-in-law, Clayton. She and George enjoyed being 'Snowbirds' in Arizona for several years and she was fortunate to enjoy a couple of cruises after his passing in December 1993. She designed and built her dream home in Aspen Grove subdivision in 1999. When the yard became too much for her, she bought a condo in McIntosh Grove. She lived there until she got tired of cooking for herself, then moved to Piccadilly Terrace Senior's Residence. There she enjoyed social activities with many friends, old & new. She suffered a stroke in August 2013 and had been a resident of Mt. Ida Mews Care Facility since then.
She leaves to mourn her passing, Brad Murdoch (Sandi), Roy Chaffee (Lana), and Linda Spencer (Wayne). 9 grandchildren; Tiffany Gardner (Ryan), Brandon Cumming (Ryan), Danielle Redhead (Mike), Rod Chaffee, Michelle Chaffee, Michael Chaffee (Delta), Ken Nelson (Jamie), Richard Nelson (Randall), Tracy Nelson (Dave), 3 step grandchildren; Brent Spencer (Miyuki), Stacey Spencer (Alf), Nicole Murdoch, 12 great grandchildren; Alexandra, Chayse, Tristan, Keane, Ophelia, Kyle, Cody, Christine, William, Maya, Derek & Ethan, 4 step great grandchildren; Lily, Jack, Azera & Jeradin, 3 great, great grandchildren; Bentley, Sara-Leigh & Carter. Also sister-in-law Phyllis McDonald and many nieces & nephews. She was predeceased by husband, George; son, Greg; brother, RD; sister, Jean; brother-in-law, Clayton; and parents, Mary & Donald McDonald.
The family wishes to thank Dr. Juliann Aitchison, and the wonderful staff, nurses, and caregivers at Mt. Ida Mews for the exceptional care mom received during the last 7 years.
A Celebration of Life will take place at a later date. If desired, memorial donations may be made to the Shuswap Hospital Foundation. Online condolences may be sent to the family through her obituary at www.bowersfuneralservice.com.
