April 18, 1937 - July 28, 2022
In loving memory ~
It is with much love in our hearts that we announce the passing of our mother, Sylvia Claire Martin, born to Howard and Dora Johnston in Innisfail, Alberta. Born April 18th, 1937, she was the 3rd of 5 children. Mom shared many fond memories of the various communities they lived in throughout B.C. before settling in Cedar.
In 1954 at the age of 17, she married Everett, a young farmer from down the road and they set out on their journey of life. She was a devoted wife and by the age of 23 was a mother of 4 young children. A few short years later she became a foster mother. Some children came and went while others stayed her lifetime. Of the many jobs that Mom had over the years, working at Heatherbelle Resthome was extra special to her.
When the opportunity arose Mom and Dad purchased the resthome. They worked hand-in-hand caring for the seniors who needed round-the-clock physical and emotional support. They took on this role with all their hearts, treating every resident as though they were family, with much love and kindness. In every aspect of her life Mom always paid attention to the details, wanting everything to be done just so.
Mom took great joy in appreciating the simple things in life and the comforts of her home. While nibbling on something sweet she could often be found sitting alongside Dad admiring their beautiful flower beds, the birds, the butterflies, and especially the dragonflies. She loved to cook, bake, knit, crochet, play the piano, as well as she enjoyed creating the craft of the season. Mom was truly creative at heart.
Mom passed away in the early hours of July 28th, 2022, with her family at her side. An angel in disguise, she will be remembered for her strength and love for others, doing what was right and always sneaking an extra bite of her homemade fudge after we went to bed. We take comfort in knowing that she is being welcomed on the other side by the love of her life, Everett, to whom she was married for 65 years. She leaves behind her brother Les (Joan) Johnston; sister Janet Blue; son Mike (Shirley); daughters Marianne Titley, Karen Martin and Nicki (David) Straznicky; 12 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and numerous nephews and nieces. She was predeceased by her sisters, Joyce Davis and Grace Mlazgar; her son Glen; and son-in-law John.
As requested by Mom, there will be no service.
In lieu of flowers, please 'Pay it Forward' by carrying out a random act of kindness.
Love and kindness are never wasted
