Valerie May (Dieno) Westgate

“Go placidly amid the noise and the haste, and remember what peace there may be in silence.”  Val quietly took her leave on October 27, 2008 at Hillside Village in Salmon Arm BC at the age of 57 years, after a lengthy battle with Multiple Sclerosis. Born February 5, 1951, Val grew up in Davidson SK and moved to Chilliwack BC with friend Joyce in 1976, and then with her family to the Shuswap in 1992. Predeceased by her mother Alvena, Val is survived by her husband John, daughter Kimberly, father William, brothers Terry (Carol), Glen (Doris), Garnet (Norma), Lindsay (Karen) and sister Trudy (Scott), and many nieces and nephews.

“Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.”  Val was well known, loved, and will be missed for her engaging smile, her quick wit, and especially for her strong will and spirit. She loved her career in commercial lending, flying planes and building houses with John, having friends over for her famous lasagna, and taking in the wildest midway rides at the fair. As a young woman, Val had a passion for skiing (rumoured to be a factor in her move from SK!) and later spent much time outdoors among her flowers, hummingbird feeders and cats. Val enjoyed visits with relatives, friends, and former classmates. She shared much wisdom, a few Anne Murray songs, a lot of laughs, Desiderata, a penchant for chocolate, her strong will, and a love of adventures with her daughter.

“And whatever your labors and aspirations, in the noisy confusion of life, keep peace in your soul.”  Thank you to Joyce and Emeric, and also to the staff and Val’s friends at Hillside Village. At her request, there will be no formal service. In lieu of flowers, donations in Val’s memory can be made to the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Canada, 1501-4330 Kingsway, Burnaby, British Columbia V5H 4G7, (604) 689-3144.
