A month to remember

The beginning of November was a solemn one, as the leadership teams at both the Sullivan and Jackson campuses put on beautiful ceremonies to commemorate the fallen soldiers and veterans around the world.

For the assembly, the leadership teams had invited World War II veterans to speak about their experiences throughout the war, helping kids from our generation better understand and relate to the struggles that to some, seemed a very long time ago.

Bethany Hiebert, a SAS trumpet player, was given the honour of playing The Last Post and played the grave tune with beautiful tone and colour.

Later on in the month, the Salmon Arm Jewels Sr. Volleyball team placed first in their most recent tournament, ending their season on a high note.

The girls played very well as there were many great bumps and serves throughout the tournament.

However, the biggest event of the month was most definitely Fashion for Famine. The fashion event had high attendance and received much support from the community. Many members of the community stepped up by either donating raffle prizes or providing a useful service.

The project was a huge success, raising $1,200 for both our local food bank, Second Harvest, and for this year’s global cause, Adopt-a-Village in Ecuador.

The month of November ended with graduation transitions, an interview in which all graduating students must attend to talk about their achievements and contributions to the community throughout their high school careers. Many community members who acted as guest judges were thoroughly impressed by the diversity of talent situated amongst the students.

As the month of November wrapped up, students at Salmon Arm Secondary were looking forward to the Dec. 8 Jackson Jazz Band concert as well as the annual Snowball, a winter semi-formal dance.
