While views recently expressed in your paper on the issue of global warming have mostly been warnings of impending doom if it was to continue indefinitely, few have provided the scientific evidence to substantiate these claims, let alone offer realistic or practical solutions.
I was born and raised, and graduated from high school in Salmon Arm in 1970. People were just starting to become aware of a growing pollution problem. Consequently, a group of students started an environmental club, the Student CleanUp Movement. It was our objective to engage in and advocate for remedial actions to combat pollution. One of our first activities was to organize a student-led community cleanup in spring of 1970. Called “Cleanupathon,” it helped to remove the litter from our streets and raised awareness about the pollution issue. More than 100 students and area residents pitched in to help.
We entered a float in fall fair, consisting of an old outhouse mounted on a hay wagon, with a pipe out the back through which flowed a brown-coloured liquid that poured over a plywood mock-up of Shuswap Lake.
The float won first prize, but more importantly, the mayor later informed us that the town had subsequently agreed to install a sewage treatment plant. Up until then, raw sewage had been dumped directly into the lake.
My point is that everyone has a responsibility to become informed regarding the facts on this critical issue – not just accept the word of so-called experts.
