Everyone has a role in mental wellness

In any given year, one in five people in Canada will experience a mental health problem or illness

Mental illness has a significant cost to our society.

In any given year, one in five people in Canada will experience a mental health problem or illness, with a cost to the economy in excess of $50 billion. Only one in three people who experience a mental health problem will seek out and receive treatment.

Many people living with a mental illness say the stigma is worse than the symptoms they feel. Experiences of stigma and discrimination can be barriers that prevent many from seeking the help they need to get well.

It can also lead people to attempt to hide their illness until it becomes too severe to ignore. At that point, the situation may have escalated to the point of requiring police intervention.

But there are things community members can do to help those who may be in need before a crisis point is reached.

There are many ways you can help reduce stigma and discrimination about mental illness in your community. The Canadian Mental Health Association offers some tips.

Be aware of your attitudes, behaviour and language. See a person beyond their mental illness, for who they are, their dreams and unique qualities.

Be inclusive. People with mental health and substance use problems have a right to an equal part in society. This includes access to jobs, housing, recreation and other services.

And help remember, help is immediately available if you or someone you know is in the midst of a mental health crisis.
