Lots for kids to do this summer

All ages: Several South Shuswap groups host variety of programs.

A local non-profit volunteer organization, the North and South Shuswap Community Resources Association has been providing great programs for children in our area since 2007.

Leigh Robinson and Christine Tough will tell you they have been so busy in developing and providing a wide range of programs for kids, that they haven’t taken much time to promote their programs to the community.

So, here’s an overview:

• The Sorrento and Country Kids Preschool programs provide quality, licensed child-care settings led by educators and early childhood specialists;

Programs are available to three- and four-year-old children. Registration for the 2015-2016 school year is now open;

• The South Shuswap Playgroup is a free, parented drop-in program for children aged from newborn to five-years old and is held at Shuswap Lake Estates.

The program operates from 9 a.m. to noon on Thursday mornings, from September to May;

• Playgroup in the Park will run every Monday in July at Sorrento Blind Bay Park from  10 a.m. to noon;

• Party in the Park will be held at Sorrento-Blind Bay Park starting at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, June 17.

This will be a free, full morning of activities with games, art, outdoor activities, and splash park fun;

• Open Gym is a free, drop-in gym program for six- to 11-year-olds, held at North Shuswap, Sorrento and Carlin schools. Fall dates TBA;

• Mother Goose and Pyjama Storytime are both free, drop-in programs for children from newborn to five years old;

• Mother Goose will be held at Sorrento-Blind Bay Park this spring on Fridays from 10 to 11 a.m. ;

• Pyjama Storytime will resume again in the fall;

• Family hikes are organized in collaboration with the Shuswap Trail Alliance and are held at various trails, usually on Saturday mornings. More information is available on their  website at www.shuswaptrailalliance.com;

• YOUth Drop-in is a free drop-in program for youth aged 11 to 18 years, which runs from September to May. Youth drop-in includes activities such as pool, foosball, movies, art, snacks and socializing with friends;

• The very popular Red Cross Swimming Lessons at the Lake are held at various locations including Sunnybrae, the North Shuswap and Blind Bay, for children ages three and up.

These are two-week sessions, and each session involves eight, 30- to 45-minute lessons. Cost ranges from $45 to $55 per child.

New programs on the drawing board for 2015 include:

• Learn to play tennis lessons for youths ages seven to 15 years old in partnership with the Shuswap Lake Estates Tennis Club;

• Learn to play golf for seven to 12 year olds, and

• An exciting Community Kitchen Project in partnership with Sorrento Centre Farm.

These programs are fabulous!
