Possession: In U11 Boys Development play Sunday at Little Mountain

The Shuswap U11 Girls development team travelled to Kamloops on Sunday, May 27 to play two strong teams.

In their first game, against Vernon, the Shuswap girls came out strong. Their efforts were rewarded 10 minutes into the game when Emma Kirkman scored the first goal, with the assist going to Paige Saitz. Soon after, Courteney Bacon scored an unassisted goal for Shuswap. Vernon managed to get one goal in the second half but it wasn’t enough. Shuswap won 2-1. In their second game Shuswap faced a strong Kelowna team. Shuswap continued to work hard, resulting in a scoreless tie. Both of Shuswap’s games had solid goaltending by Jessie Ellerbeck-Hanna and Hannah Tarzwell. The Shuswap girls play next in Salmon Arm on Sunday, June 3.

Blaze beaten

On Saturday the U14 boys defeated Kamloops Blaze 2-0 for their first win of the season. The Shuswap boys played a solid game with goals being scored by Keenan Starkell and Josh Kujat. Keeper Nick Ough showed his skills and earned a shutout for the team. Joey Guerra’s solid defence earned him player of the game. The Shuswap boys displayed good technical skills and great team- work and more than earned their victory against the Kamloops team.

Tight contests

It was the second game of the season Saturday for the U14 Shuswap girls versus the Kamloops Blaze Blue, with the previous game ending in a scoreless  tie. After much back and forth, Kamloops got  a break along the wing, and flew to the net with the ball. With a high shot in the far right corner of the net, the first goal of the game was scored. Unfortunately for Shuswap, it was also the last.

On Sunday, Shuswap played host to the Penticton Pinnacles.

With the two team’s last game ending in a 2 – 1 win for Penticton, off what the Selects and parents agreed to be a bad call leading to the winning goal off a penalty shot, Shuswap was looking for a win.

The play was tight and, as the second half rolled around, the scoreboard was still empty, Kamloops made a nice cross in Shuswap’s end, and just barely made a shot in the bottom right corner.

Kamloops attempted the same strategy, but unfortunately, a bad spin on the ball ricocheted it off a Shuswap player into the net. Two goals scored in less than two minutes.

With only minutes remaining, Shuswap got a breakaway and launched a shot past the Kamloops’ goalie.

There wasn’t enough time to tie it up and the game ended with the same score as the first, a 2 – 1 win for Penticton.

Selects strong

In a game Sunday that featured beautiful passing and great possession from the Selects, the U16 Shuswap boys claimed a 5-0 shutout at Blackburn over Vernon United.

The Selects dominated play, scoring their first two goals in the first five minutes.

Although Salmon Arm defeated Vernon in their first contest early this season, Sunday’s game was in contrast to the Selects’ second meeting with Vernon, an exhibition game at Blackburn two weeks ago that saw Vernon take a 2-1 win.

Tough team

The U18 boys were first on the scoreboard in an exhibition game versus the Kamloops Blaze Sunday, but weren’t able to claim the game.

After an early goal scored by Sten Korver the U-18 lost their home game by a score of 1-3.

Masters play

Last Tuesday, May 22, Ted United hosted Rosters from Vernon. The under-staffed Ted United managed to get the ball to do the work and earn a 4-0 victory. Emily Styles started off the scoring early in the first half with a well- placed, left-footed shot from the top of the 18-yard box. Sue Doray continued her scoring ways, notching the next two goals. The score stayed at 3-0 for most of the second half thanks to some great saves by the Rosters keeper. Cathy Bartsch found the net near the end of the game to finish off the scoring. Linda Yawney made her debut in net earning a shut-out for Ted.
