Golds look to rebound against Langley Saints on home ground

Numbers got the best of the Golds football team in their first game of the regular season against Holy Cross

Numbers got the best of the Golds football team in their first game of the regular season against Holy Cross.

Only 18 Golds were fit to make the trip to the Lower Mainland, compared to Holy Cross’ 35-man roster. The final score was 41-7 for Holy Cross.

Despite the small roster, the Golds came out firing on all cylinders as they scored the opening points in the contest.

A big yardage catch early in the first quarter by Mark Podschadly setup a six yard touchdown pass from quarterback Jayden Mourato to Tyler Chartier.

The Golds found themselves trailing by only a major after Holy Cross answered with a pair of first half touchdowns of their own.

“Unfortunately the numbers disadvantage came through in the second half and our boys wore down physically,” said head coach Jordan Grieve.

“As coaches we do not feel the score was indicative of how the game went as several late touchdowns made the score look much worse than the game flow,” said grieve.

This Friday, the Golds will host the Langley Saints at the Jackson field at 2 p.m.

Both teams will look to claim their first wins of the regular season as Langley was defeated by Argyle in their opener.

“We need to get healthy this week in preparation for our first home season game. We are always much more comfortable at home and it’s great to have fan support,” Grieve said.
