Junior Golds off to strong hoops start

The Salmon Arm Secondary Junior Golds Basketball team is sporting a two win, two loss record after their first week of play.

The Seaton Sonics travelled to Salmon Arm on Thursday for an exhibition game and were defeated by the Golds 48-15. Norman Ambauen led all scorers with nine points, followed by Brayden Koprowsky, Jordan Hislop and Lenny DePatie with eight each.

On Friday, the Golds faced Mount Boucherie in the opening game of the OKM Invitational. Salmon Arm played well defensively, but had trouble scoring, and fell to the Bears 39-28.

Ambauen was named the player of the game (POG) for his all-round performance.

DePatie scored 14 of his game-high 17 points to lead the Golds past Penticton 38-26 in the team’s second game. Hislop was named POG for his numerous steals and assists.

Grade 9 guard Josh Kujat netted eight points, but the Golds fell short, losing to Sahali 42-30 in their final game. Steven Kooistra was given the POG T-shirt.

The Golds and Jewels will host Armstrong on Thursday at the Jackson campus. Game times are: Jewels at 5 p.m. and the Golds at 6:30 p.m.
