Junior Jewels’ winning streak continues

The Jr. Jewels soccer team remain undefeated this season with a 2-1 win over Vernon Secondary School (VSS) on April 20

The Jr. Jewels soccer team remain undefeated this season with a 2-1 win over Vernon Secondary School (VSS) on April 20.

“The first half was an even battle over possession, with quite a few opportunities for both teams,” said Jr. Jewels coach Dan Gunn.

VSS made a precise pass through the back line resulting in a breakaway. Heather Spalding, Salmon Arm’s goalkeeper challenged for the ball to clear it off the VSS attacker, but the resulting rebound ended up in the net.

The Jr. Jewels came out strong in the second half, with Madeline Wiebe making a solo run from midfield across the back line and finishing with a chip shot over the VSS keeper to the back post.

“VSS was feeling the pressure and came on strong again but the Jr. Jewels defence held strong,” Gunn said.

Hannah Tarzwell and Jayda Blair almost linked up for a nice through ball which resulted in a handball against VSS in the box, and a penalty kick was awarded.

Megan Hart stepped up and placed it perfectly into the bottom left corner of the net.

“After a controversial call, a high kick to the face of Shelbi Richard which forced her to leave the game, the Jr. Jewels seemed to fire up again to aggressively defend their lead and take home the win in a hard fought game,” Gunn said.

The Jr. Jewels’ next game is May 4, 3:30 p.m. at Seaton Secondary School in Vernon, where they will strive to remain undefeated.
