Midget Silvertips get first taste of victory

The Salmon Arm Honda Midget Silvertips Tier 2’s celebrated their home opener on Sunday with a victory over the Kelowna Midget Rockets. Eric Austin opened up the scoring for the ’Tips five minutes into the first period, unassisted and short-handed. Darien Blight added another unassisted goal three minutes later, again short-handed. Levi Chamberlain notched his first goal before the end of the first.

Levi Chamberlain notched his first goal before the end of the first.

Kelowna got on the scoreboard early in the second period, but Chamberlain answered back with his second of the game, short-handed.

Austin got his second of the game in the third period, assisted by Chamberlain.  Kelowna got an even-strength goal before the ’Tips got into more penalty trouble, playing five-on-three for almost five minutes.  Kelowna was only able to score one goal during this time.  Final score was 5-3 for Salmon Arm. Blake Puetz was solid in net for the ’Tips.

Salmon Arm Minor Hockey is hosting a Midget Tier 2 tournament this weekend with teams coming from Vernon, Vancouver, Kelowna, Okotoks, Prince George, Quesnel, Port Moody, Chilliwack, Kamloops and the Yukon.

Salmon Arm opens the tournament Friday at noon against division rival Vernon.  The ’Tips hit the ice again Saturday at 9:45 a.m. against Quesnel and then again at 3:45 against Yukon.
