A slow start to the game cost the Golds as they hosted the high-flying Argyle Pipers, and remain winless in the regular season.
The North Vancouver squad built up a 24-0 halftime lead on the back of strong play by quarterback Mac Ward who threw for 269 yards and a pair of touchdowns.
“We came out very flat in the first half and struggled in all phases of the game,” said Golds’ head coach Jordan Grieve.
The Golds’ defence struggled to bring down the Pipers’ running back Christian Lawry in the wet and muddy conditions as he rushed for 94 yards.
After a break at the half mark, the Golds returned to Jackson Field looking like a new team.
“I was extremely happy with how the boys responded in the second half. Our offense really clicked we had exceptional plays from Wyatt Blackburn and Austin Crocker,” said Grieve.
Tyler Chartier hauled in the Golds’ first major, despite tight coverage from the Pipers safety. Quarterback Jayden Mourato connected with Chartier for the 23-yard pass.
Argyle regained their 24-point advantage shortly after.
“Our defence came up big after that in the second half and continually got us the ball quickly so we could keep marching down the field.”
Mourato threw his second touchdown pass of the game, connecting with Crocker on a spectacular diving catch.
“Unfortunately a couple of untimely fumbles swung the tide and we were not able to overcome our first-half deficit.”
This Friday, the Golds will host G.W. Graham, from Chilliwack at the Jackson Field at 2 p.m.
“They are a very good team and it’s going to be an incredible challenge for us.”
