Recreation society to hear request about reduced field rates for seniors

Whether a seniors’ slo-pitch team gets a reduced rate on field rental will be up to the Shuswap Recreation Society.

Whether a seniors’ slo-pitch team gets a reduced rate on field rental will be up to the Shuswap Recreation Society.

Members of the Salmon Arm Vintage Slo-pitch team wrote to council, requesting a rate similar to that charged to seniors in other areas.

The group noted that two Salmon Arm seniors teams play twice per week during the day at the Canoe ball fields. They said they’re being charged full rate – $18 per hour.

“Sorrento does not charge the seniors for the use of their fields,” stated the letter to city council. “Kelowna charges $1 per year for the seniors’ use of their fields. Kamloops charges $6 per hour to the Kamloops Senior Slo-Pitch League for the use of the Charles Anderson Park fields.”

They note that of the 22 games on their schedule, 11 are played locally, which bring in revenue to the community, as do the annual wind-up tournaments.

“As seniors, we would greatly appreciate a reduced rate so that we can continue to play ball at the Canoe fields.”

Mayor Marty Bootsma suggested that the request should be forwarded to the recreation society. Coun. Kevin Flynn asked if the rates have already been set for this year, and chief administrative officer Carl Bannister confirmed they have.
