The Salmon Arm Sockeyes came away with many personal best times and top-three finishes from their first in-season meet in Lumby last weekend. The Sockeyes won the meet and, with only 43 swimmers, nearly doubled the second-place team’s score, compared to Kelowna’s 55 and Revelstoke’s 65 swimmers.

Sockeye swimmer Connor Levins broke the six-and-under 25-metre freestyle and backstroke records, from 2010 and 2007 respectively. Chantel Jeffrey came home with a handful of records, breaking the division two girls’ 50-m butterfly, 50-m backstroke, 100-m individual medley and 100-m freestyle.  Stephen Moore broke the division two boys’ 50-m breaststroke record from 2008, while Emma Leigh Chapman broke the division three girls’ 50-m freestyle record from 2009. Division three boys had a successful weekend, with Matt Cooper taking out the 100-m freestyle record from 2010, Jaeden Izik-Dzurko breaking the 50-m breaststroke record from 2007, and Matthew Nesdoly replacing the 14-year-old 50-m backstroke record from 1997.  Brayden Gilliam had an excellent first 100-m butterfly of his career, breaking the division five boys’ record from 2003. Jake Kitchen beat records in the division seven boys 200-m individual medley from 2010 and the 100-m backstroke from 2009.  The division three mixed 200-m freestyle relay broke the 2007 record. On the team were Matt Cooper, Claire Hall, Ben Novakowski, and Gaelyn Gilliam.

Jon Wex had an outstanding start to the season, earning personal bests in every event and executing great technical focus.  Ben Novakowski and Madison Smith also showed technical improvements, resulting in numerous personal best times. Keeya Corbett and Julianne Moore took top placings in every division-one girls’ event, and teammate Matthew Bushell had multiple top finishes in the boys’ division-one category. Siblings Emma and Connor Levins both earned best times in every swim. Claire Hall and Sunny Pickup had many best times, and had excellent swims on the relays.
