Shuswap Swimmers try pentathlon meet

The Shuswap Swimming Team attended a unique invitational swim meet in Kelowna on the March 12/13, weekend. The Penticton team was hosting their annual Pentathlon swim meet (in Kelowna as their pool is being renovated) and swimmers were encouraged to compete in five races in a given day. At the end of the competition not only were swimmers ranked based upon individual race results, but they were also ranked by the total times of all five of the races on that day for an overall pentathlon score.

• 10 and younger girls – Lilli Rakose-Lund she picked up fifth place as her best result, coming in the 100-metre breaststroke. Her times in three of her four races all saw her break team records. Morgan Rasmuson picked up seventh place as her best result coming in the 200-m individual medley.

• 11- to 12-year-old girls – Paige Coutlee picked up three fifth- place finishes in the 100-m and 200-m backstroke and 200-m freestyle races. Coutlee’s time in the 100m butterfly broke the existing team record too. Emma Pyle earned sixth place in the 200-m breaststroke race, but had to leave early due to illness.

• 13- to 14-year-old girls – Jessie-May Baird took ninth place in the 200-m freestyle. She also saw her time in the 200-m backstroke eclipse the previous record by four seconds. Chiara Kuzmick placed 10th in the 100-m breaststroke race.

• 15 and older girls – Emma Chorneyko placed 15 place in the  100-m backstroke.

• 11- to 12-year-old  boys – Olin Mosher and Torrey McKee posted multiple best times. Mosher and McKee both earned fourth place finishes 400-m individual medley (with 28 seconds improvement) and 100-m butterfly races (with six seconds of improvement), respectively.

• 13- to 14-year-old boys – Thomas Flahr took sixth place and a new team record in the 200-m freestyle. Logan Pilias raced only once (14th place in 100-m backstroke), before having to pull out due to illness.

After the water had calmed, for those swimmers who raced in all five races (100-m fly, 100-m back, 100-m breast, 100-m free and 200-m individual medley totals), they received their pentathlon rankings as follows:

•11-12 boys – fifth place Torrey McKee.

•11-12 girls – seventh place Paige Coutlee.

•13-14 girls – 11th place Chiara Kuzmick; 12th place Jessie-May Baird.

•15 and older girls – 14th place Emma Chorneyko. 15:36:24
