Beautiful tourney: In the Men’s A Final

The annual August long weekend Shuswap Soccer tournament was a success once again, with happy teams under sunny skies.

Organizer Alun Walters summed it up.

“It was a lot of fun, it’s a blast for me every year,” he said Tuesday. “There’s lots of work going into it and it went really well. The teams were great, it was an easy group of people, they’re very low-maintenance.”

When the three days of play concluded Monday for eight women’s and eight men’s teams, the Men’s B Final winners were Salmon Arm’s NOD Eagle Homes, defeating the Calgary Drillers 3-2 in a penalty shootout.

In the Men’s A Final, the Calgary Bhoys outplayed Salmon Arm’s LWO 6-0.

In the Women’s B Final, the BMW Eagles from Calgary edged the Vernon Controllers 1-0.

The Women’s A Final went to Victoria Chix With Balls, who squeaked by Kelowna’s Boston Pizza Diablos 1-0 in extra time.

Taking women’s MVP goalie honours was Kelowna goalie Taryn Sakaki, originally from Salmon Arm.

Walters, who has been organizing the tournament for about seven years, says most of the profits from the tournament go to a scholarship fund for local soccer players in memory of his brother, Dave Walters.
