Soccer Valleys: Westside squeaks by Salmon Arm Secondary's Junior Jewels

The Salmon Arm Secondary Junior Jewels soccer team made it all the way to the finals, but weren’t able to capture their dream of gold at the Valleys held in Kamloops.

The Salmon Arm Secondary Junior Jewels soccer team made it all the way to the finals, but weren’t able to capture their dream of gold.

The team went to Kamloops to compete in the Valleys after winning the league championship.

Coach Marvin Gros  said six teams took part, with three in the Jewels’ pool. In the first game, Salmon Arm lost to Fulton, after giving up a  3-1 lead. However, the Jewels got their feet under them in the second game, beating Valleyview from Kamloops 4-3.

Moving into the semi-finals, the Jewels played Kalamalka, the first-place team in the other pool, defeating them 2-1.

Then came the final against Westside, which Salmon Arm lost 4-3. Although the Jewels were leading, Gross said the team had a mental lapse at the start of the second half, giving up two quick goals.

“Overall, we had a really good season – the girls really came together, especially towards the end,” he said.

The team was made up of Grade 9 and 10 girls, which he expects will lead to a strong team next year as well.
