Students race to success at District 83 Elementary Track Meet in Salmon Arm

The weather smiled on athletes at Little Mountain fields in Salmon Arm last Tuesday as they competed in School District #83’s annual Elementary District Track Meet.

The weather smiled on athletes at Little Mountain fields last Tuesday as they competed in School District #83’s annual Elementary District Track Meet.

According to the district website, Shuswap Middle School won the trophy for accumulating the most points of all schools, while Bastion Elementary won the population-adjusted points score for all schools.

Alex Astasiewicz, a Grade 7 student at Shuswap Middle School, won the Don Urquhart Memorial Trophy for overall male. This is his third time to receive the award. The memorial trophy has been presented to athletes since 1953 and he is the only athlete to have won it three years in a row. Taylor Corston, also in Grade 7 at Shuswap Middle School, won the Breanne Martin Memorial aggregate for overall female. The two were also part of Shuswap’s 100-m relay team with Sage King and Laura-Beth Moore, which they ran in under 60 seconds, shattering a 15-year record. Individual athlete aggregate awards went to: • Male born in 1998 – Alex Astasiewicz, 1st 100-m sprints, long jump and 400-m; • Female 1998 – Taylor Corston, 1st 100-m sprints and 400-m, 2nd long jump.

• Male 1999 – Levi Peterson, King’s Christian School, 1st 100-m sprints, 2nd 400-m and high jump; • Female 1999 (tie) – Candice Vuong, Len Wood Middle School, 1st long jump, 2nd 100-m sprints and ball throw; Hope Bremner, MV Beattie Elementary, 1st 100-m sprints and 400-m, 3rd long jump.

• Male 2000 – Bryce Roberge, Carlin Elementary/Middle School, 1st 100-m and long jump; • Female 2000 – Zakiya Journeau, Bastion Elementary, 1st 100-m and long jump, 3rd 400-m.

• Male 2001 – Keegan Woods, Carlin Elementary/Middle School, 1st 800-m, 4th 400-m; • Female 2001 (tie) – Kate Milne, Bastion Elementary, 1st 400-m, 3rd 800-m; Olivia Stewart, Armstrong Elementary, 1st 800-m, 3rd 400-m.

Twenty schools attended and great sportsmanship was shown by all athletes.
