Taking fourth place

Salmon Arm’s Midget House 2 left behind the first snowfall to participate in South Okanagan’s tournament in Oliver

Salmon Arm’s Midget House 2 left behind the first snowfall to participate in South Okanagan’s tournament in Oliver, Dec. 2.

Salmon Arm launched easily into their first game with a strong lead in the first period against Tri City, thanks in part to the line effort of Jordan Fournier, August Thomson and Jackson Mount.

Salmon Arm led 8-5 in the second. Tri City scored consistently to reach seven goals in the third period, but Salmon Arm pulled well away in the final minutes to win 11-7.

Salmon Arm faced South Okanagan Saturday morning, working hard for the first period to put distance between them.  Landon Quilty broke through five minutes into the second to set the score 1-0.  Despite being short-handed, Dylan Eckland’s quick maneuvering added another to board. Tyler Bushell brought the score to 3-0. Ethan Senger’s powerful slap shots from the blue line were frequent; before adding a fourth goal in the third.  Liam Alstad finished the game to shut out South Okanagan 5-0.

Salmon Arm, tied for first, faced the Nelson Leafs that evening.

Nelson demonstrated good puck control and skating skills, feeding consistently to Mike Zarikoff.  Zarikoff was a pleasure to watch for speed and agility, putting his opponents on edge every time the puck was in his possession. By the end of the first, Nelson led 2-1.  Salmon Arm fought their way back, taking advantage of a Nelson penalty, to meet them 2-2, in the second.

Nelson’s head coach, was removed from the game for unsportsmanlike conduct.  The two teams played a close match in the third. With seven minutes left in the third, Nelson took the lead, 5-4.

Salmon Arm played their final game Sunday against Langley, narrowly avoiding a shut-out thanks to Quilty’s goal late in the third.  With a result of 5-1 for Langley, goaltender Colby Geiger took home MVP, and Salmon Arm settled for fourth.
