U18 boys soaring to the top

Salmon Arm soccer team making history

The Shuswap U18 boys select soccer team has added another accomplishment to their heady list of successes.

The boys won their Interior division and will be heading to the provincial final in Richmond on July 3.

There they play just one game against an Abbotsford team representing the Coast. The winner of that game heads to the national tournament in New Brunswick.

“This is a really big deal,” says coach Brad Ross.

“To my knowledge, no other Salmon Arm team has done it, to play one game and then into the nationals.”

The same team also won gold in the high school provincials last season.

“I don’t think anyone’s been this far relative to that national tournament,” said Ross. “In a little town like this, it’s unexpected.”

Last year the team was in the ‘B’ division but this year upgraded to ‘A.’

Ross said it will be a tough contest, going head to head with the best team on the Coast.

The game determining who will be heading to New Brunswick takes place in the Hugh Boyd stadium in Richmond, 11 a.m. on Sunday, July 3. 16:19:29
