Couple honoured for efforts to preserve Okanagan-Shuswap history

A Salmon Arm couple was awarded honorary lifetime memberships to the Okanagan Historical Society for their dedication

A Salmon Arm couple was awarded honorary lifetime memberships to the Okanagan Historical Society for  their dedication.

Rosemary and Alan Wilson have both been long-time members of the Salmon Arm branch of the historical society.

Rosemary joined the branch in the late 1990s, and by 2001 she had become the secretary on the local executive council. Since then, she held a variety of positions on the executive and has stepped up to fill any unexpected vacancies. She also volunteers at the Haney Heritage Village and Museum, helping keep track of the archives.

“Rosemary has always done most of the work,” said Alan, who became the branch director at the society in 1998. “I’m always behind her 100 per cent.”

Alan has also been a volunteer at the museum. He’s a reliable source for clarifying any historical information about the area. And although they live in Salmon Arm, the couple’s interest in history isn’t defined by any lines on a map.

“Our interest isn’t just in Salmon Arm, it’s in the whole area, because everyone is intertwined,” said Rosemary.

The Wilsons are adamant that they’re not alone on helping to make things tick at the historical society.

“There are many people who have done lots for the organization,” said Rosemary.
