Cyclists must follow road rules

Salmon Arm boasts but one, one-way street, Alexander Street, from the Trans-Canada Highway to the T-intersection with Lakeshore Drive

As you know, Salmon Arm boasts but one, one-way street, Alexander Street, from the Trans-Canada Highway to the T-intersection with Lakeshore Drive, roughly east to west. Today, Wednesday, July 6 at 1:03 p.m., I was heading to the T when what do I see? Not one, but two people on bicycles coming towards me; a young woman and a young man nonchalantly riding east, towards the Trans-Canada Highway. Neither was wearing a helmet. As it was a nice warm, sunny day, I had my driver’s window down, and took the opportunity to remind them that “the rules of the road applied to them too. This is a one-way street.”

If bicyclists want motorists to respect them and share the road, they should respect motorists and obey the rules of the road.

Sincerely,

Ineke Hughes
