Pink Shirt Day was recognized in the North Okanagan Shuswap school district this week, with one Salmon Arm school letting students mark the day with markers.

At North Canoe Elementary’s Pink Shirt Day assembly on Wednesday, Feb. 28, principal David Wellingham said the time was used to talk about the difference between bullying and conflict.

“I had some students act out bullying behaviors and so we could talk about how to solve them,” said Wellingham. “As part of this, we showed how the ‘bystanders’ have the greatest ability to stop bullying by saying ‘no’ and seeking help.”

For a closing activity, students used white shirts, not pink, to create a design showing how they are inclusive, accepting, peaceful and kind.

“We called this being ‘uniquely you at North Canoe’,” said Wellingham.
